It’s time to crack a beer and dust off that passport because the Pubcast is back and we’re heading to Romania! We traveled there during the holidays in December 2019, so it’s time to revisit some winter warmers and international beverages in general.

In this episode, we sit down with Ioana Coca and Laurentiu Mandrila, Co-Owners and Brewers at Oriel Beer in Bucharest. We discuss their focus on Belgian beers, the Romanian craft beer community, and their very creative and often non-traditional barrel-aging program.

Kate Bernot is a wordsmith for the hungry and intoxicated i.e. she’s one of the best voices you’ll find in today’s beer media landscape. As a journalism major and certified beer judge, Kate has all the right credentials to be the beer editor at The Takeout, but it’s her storytelling abilities that have set her apart for a decade as a food & beverage writer.

Kate and I met up while we were attending the Beer Now Conference in Great Falls, MT where we were able to take a quick break for a pint and a conversation at an unsuspecting Montana craft beer bar called The Stein Haus. We cover everything from tips for aspiring beer writers to inclusion in the beer industry in this discussion, but if you’re just here for the beers, never fear! Kate fills us in on some of the kitschiest bars and breweries across Montana, including an establishment where live mermaid shows come with your beverage.

Travis Sheridan just might have the coolest job in the world. As the Executive Director of the Venture Café Global Institute, Travis travels the world helping to create collaborative innovation communities in cities like Sydney, Tokyo, Rotterdam, and Philadelphia (just to name a few). As a life-long hustler and connecter, it’s pretty safe to say he’s the Anthony Bourdain of startups and innovation.

Travis and I met up at The Scottish Arms in St. Louis, MO where we discussed what makes startup communities across the globe unique, the stories behind some of the craziest startup ideas Travis has encountered, and how “innovation is the process of improving the human condition.” As a strong voice in the St. Louis community as well (don’t forget to check out his own podcast Nothing Impossible), we dive into the St. Louis startup scene too, while obviously consuming a couple of St. Louis craft brews in the process.

Did you know that 98 percent of today’s 6,000+ (and counting) U.S. breweries are independent, but make up only 13 percent of the beer market by volume? Most don’t. But with the recently-introduced Independent Craft Brewer Seal, folks like Julia Herz are helping you know when you’re drinking a true craft beer.

Julia is the Craft Beer Program Director for the Brewers Association, and a driving force behind their “That’s Independence You’re Tasting” campaign. As large macrobreweries continue to buy up small, independent breweries, it’s becoming increasingly harder to tell when you’re drinking a craft beer, or a simply something that simply looks like a craft brew.

In this final episode from the 2018 Great American Beer Festival, Julia shares all the details behind the seal, what it stands for, and why it’s more important than ever for beer drinkers to #SeekTheSeal and support independent craft breweries.

If you’re a millennial beer lover (or heck, a beer lover of any age!) then you know Untappd. In this app, beer drinkers can check-in, review, and share pictures of the beer they’ve got in front of them. Simply put, Untappd is the social media platform for beer.

Co-Founders Tim Mather and Greg Avola had never met before they found one another on Twitter, and while they created the app assuming only a handful of their friends would give it a shot, Untappd now has well over 8 million users.

I met up with Greg and Tim in the middle of this year’s Great American Beer Festival in Denver, and amidst all of the beer-fueled chaos, they were able to share the story behind Untappd’s growth and the lessons learned (and beers consumed) along the way.

It’s not often that we get to feature other beer podcasters on the Pubcast, but the Great American Beer Festival was the perfect spot for some quick collaborations.

Aaron Johnson hosts the Cascadian Beer Podcast, a show that highlights the stories behind craft beer in the Pacific Northwest. Aaron was also at GABF covering the festival for his podcast, and after we sampled some brews together, we jumped behind the mics to discuss the event, a few of our favorite beers from the weekend, and Aaron’s own international journey that got him into beer podcasting.
